Songs of Lazarus are pieces that I wrote or completed during recovery from a near-fatal coma and illness that began in 1999, as recounted in my book Healing Lazarus. The disease was a brain infection that left me damaged in many ways, including the near total loss of my piano technique. As I slowly healed, and slowly regained my keyboard facility, these pieces emerged - some new, some taken from pre-illness notebooks. As I like to say when I perform the piece "Healing Lazarus" in concert: "Eveyone should have a healing song, and this is mine."
