Well Music
Well Music is a cycle of five piano pieces performed
on a vintage nine-foot Steinway piano, recorded in a
private home in San Francisco. They were written in
1987 after Lewis’ recovery from cancer—thus the
title—but Well also suggests depth, as in a well. This
cycle of pieces is the most explicitly classical of his
albums, with echoes of Schumann, Ravel, Scriabin
and Debussy — although Boogie Ça Va is a virtuosic
tribute to Gershwin and the stride pianists of his era.
